Vote Yes for Food Security: Propositions LL and MM
It’s World Food Day—And Hunger Is a Gender Equity Issue
On World Food Day (October 16), we’re reminded that hunger disproportionately affects women and girls. Globally, they make up nearly 60% of those experiencing hunger. In the U.S., single mothers and their families face significantly higher rates of food insecurity than other households.
This fall, Coloradans have the opportunity to vote for food security. Here’s what you need to know.
The Need in Our State
In Colorado, 1 in 8 people—and 1 in 7 children—face hunger. That’s nearly 745,000 neighbors, including 172,540 children. Single-parent households, often headed by women, are hit hardest.
Rising grocery prices are making it harder for families to afford enough food. Federal budget cuts compound these challenges by slashing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding and drastically limiting eligibility. New research WFCO and Colorado Fiscal Institute will release later this month shows that federal changes put nearly 40,000 Colorado women at risk of losing SNAP benefits.
Take Action—Vote for Food Security!
This November, vote Yes on Propositions LL and MM to strengthen the Healthy School Meals for All program and support SNAP. These measures ensure all public-school students can continue to get healthy meals at school.
At WFCO, we believe every Coloradan should have the rights and resources to thrive. Learn more about why we support Propositions LL and MM and other measures that fund essential resources for women and families in our ballot guide, The Womanifesto.
