Meet Jen Schwem, WFCO Database Administrator

Jen Schwem joined The Women’s Foundation of Colorado as the new Database Administrator in April 2024. In addition to her new role at WFCO, Jen is known for her dedication to supporting women and immigrants, emphasizing the importance of empowerment and community strength. She has been inspired by leaders like Sylvia Clark of Planned Parenthood and Jessica Maitland Mayo of Judi’s House, who shaped her career in nonprofits with their resilience and empathetic leadership. Learn about her love of comedy, spending time in nature, and more.

Tell us something not many people know about you?

Jen Schwem stands with her husband as they take a selfie on a hike in Colorado. Something not many people know about me is that I loved to ride motorbikes as a kid. I have fond memories of sitting on the handlebars or on the back while my dad drove. As I got older, I learned to drive on my own and I loved to tool around our property in rural Wisconsin.

Why is supporting women important to you?

When women are empowered, everyone benefits. As we support and elevate women, we create positive effect that lift entire communities.

What other philanthropic passions do you have?

I am passionate about supporting immigrants as they navigate the challenges of a new environment. I think it is important to support organizations that provide resources to help immigrants with legal assistance and other basic needs. When we help immigrants, I believe we strengthen the social and economic fabric of our society.

What do you believe is the most pressing issue women and families are facing in Colorado?

Denver has seen significant increases in housing costs since I moved here from the Midwest in the mid 90’s. The lack of affordable housing options puts a such a financial strain on families, making it difficult for many to find stable, places to live and use up a disproportionate percentage of their income.

Who is your Shero? Who have been the leaders/mentors on your journey?

Two of my Sheroes bookend my career in nonprofits. Sylvia Clark was the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood when I started my first real job after college. She navigated life’s challenges with grace and determination. Under her leadership, I learned the importance of resilience and the impact of advocating for women’s health and rights. My other Shero, Jessica Maitland Mayo, led the team at Judi’s House. Jessica guided Judi’s House through tough transitions while always finding ways to uplift those around her. Her empathetic leadership and strategic vision helped the organization thrive, even in challenging circumstances. Jessica’s ability to inspire and support her team, fostering a collaborative and positive environment, has been a significant influence on my journey.

If you had to teach a class, what would it be?

I would teach a class on basic conversational Spanish.

Where do you find the most joy in your life?

I love to laugh! Going to stand up comedy shows or watching sketch comedy shows on TV takes me to my happy place.

What would you tell your 15-year-old self?

You are okay, just the way you are. And wear sunscreen!

What is your favorite place or activity to do in Colorado?

I love to see shows at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, walk trails in the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, and spend time at my friend’s cabin between Lyons and Estes Park.
