Meet Jaime Marston Cook, WFCO Major Gifts Officer

A smiling couple taking a selfie at night in front of illuminated stairs and a sign that reads "AMOR." The woman on the right has blonde hair and is wearing a black dress, while the man on the left has a beard, glasses, and is wearing a button-up shirt.

Jaime Marston Cook joined The Women’s Foundation of Colorado as major gifts officer in January, bringing her passion for women’s rights and equity. Inspired by her first college women’s studies class, Jaime is a fierce advocate for reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ equality. Outside of work, she finds joy in solo lunches with a crossword puzzle, gardening, and peaceful walks through Denver’s parks with music in her headphones. Read on to learn more about her late-blooming bicycle skills and her commitment to making Colorado a haven for all!

Tell us something not many people know about you?

I didn’t properly learn how to ride a bicycle until I was 21. I’m still not very good at it and don’t do it often, but riding a bike puts me in such a good mood.

Why is supporting women a top priority for you?

Women are at the heart of everything that makes this world beautiful and functional and, in my opinion, don’t get enough credit. My introduction to Women’s Studies class in my first semester of college opened my eyes to the injustices women and LGBTQ+ people face around the world, and I’ve been a fierce feminist ever since. Specifically, LGBTQ+  rights and reproductive rights get me the most fired up: self-determination is key to leading a free and empowered life. I feel compelled to do my part to make things better for women everywhere.

What is your vision of equity for women in Colorado?

My vision of equity is a state where all individuals, regardless of gender identity or background, thrive in an inclusive and supportive place for all, free from fear, discrimination or violence. Equity must be woven into the framework of everything we do and not erased from the public eye.

What other philanthropic passions do you have?

I am passionate about supporting the LGBTQ+ community, I really enjoy the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and I give monthly to Colorado Public Radio, the Chinook Fund, and Indigenous Women Rising. I am a new board member of the Lotus Network which provides women with educational and social opportunities to build lasting connections and am also a member of Impact100 Metro Denver. I am also a big fan of the Institute for Leaders in Development and serve on the Selection Committee to build the best possible incoming class of fundraising professionals who will support all aspects of our society.

What do you believe is the most pressing issue women and families are facing in Colorado?

I see so much anxiety and stress over the rising cost of groceries and housing, and the increasing threats to our personal freedoms and identities. We have fought hard to ensure that Colorado is a haven for people seeking the care they deserve, and we have to remain vigilant.

Who is your Shero? Who have been the leaders/mentors on your journey?

So many of my former colleagues from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains are still my mentors and dearest friends. They have helped shape me in profound ways and remain my sheroes.

If you had to teach a class, what would it be?

Probably how to repot a houseplant.

Where do you find the most joy in your life?

Going out for lunch by myself with a crossword puzzle, a book or a journal, puttering in the garden, reading a newspaper with a cat on my lap, or cooking good food with love.

What would you tell your 15-year-old self?

My mom passed away when I was 12, so I think I would tell my 15-year-old self that my life will be full of amazingly supportive and intelligent women who will help guide the way.

What is your favorite place or activity to do in Colorado?

I love to walk around Denver’s parks with friends, or alone with music in my headphones. I also LOVE Red Rocks. (Why have their concerts gotten SO expensive?!)

Favorite guilty pleasure on Netflix?

Right now, Yellowjackets, and I do not feel guilty about it!

Pineapple on pizza or no?

Pineapple on pizza is fine, but spinach and mushrooms are always my preference.
