Liz Reyes-Pastrana of Denver shares a bit about her journey from Mexico to the US, her passion for philanthropy, and her mission to break through limiting beliefs and empower women and people of color in Colorado.
Tell us something not many people know about you?
I was born and raised in Mexico and came to the US when I was 11 years old without knowing a word of English.
If you had a personal philanthropic mission statement or slogan, what would it say?
Over the years, I have honed-in on my mission to transform lives, careers, and communities through real estate. Drawing on my background as a child of immigrants, my values are cemented in both my professional and personal life.
What about our mission inspires you?
The WFCO’s mission inspires me because I wholeheartedly believe that when women come together, we can accomplish extraordinary things. The WFCO’s mission addresses intersectional justice to ensure that we reach the people at the greatest structural disadvantage.
What do you believe is the most pressing issue women and families are facing in Colorado?
I believe one of the most pressing issues for Colorado women is economic disparity and gender wage inequalities. While we are making some progress towards strengthening women’s economic security, women around the state continue to face challenges, discrimination, and violence. Women are still paid less than men and there is an even greater gap amongst women of color.
Who is your Shero?
There have been many women in my life who have had a huge influence in my upbringing and in shaping who I am today. However, the most influential woman in my life is Ana Reyes, my mother. My entrepreneurial spirit is a direct reflection of my mother’s business acumen. She has always instilled in my siblings and I that the sky is the limit and that we can achieve anything we set out to do in life. Her limited knowledge of the English language never stopped her from achieving her goals and running a successful business.
What is the best personal decision you’ve ever made? Why?
The best personal decision I have ever made was to intentionally work on my mindset to break through generational traumas and limiting beliefs. I did this by identifying the right people and coaches who helped me identify the fears and limiting beliefs that held me back from becoming the highest expression of myself. I also choose to be more intentional about the people I surround myself with. There is power in surrounding yourself by people who support you and have similar goals, ambitions and breathe light into your life.
If you had to teach a class, what would it be?
I am passionate about educating women and minorities on how to break through limiting beliefs about money to achieve financial freedom. In fact, I teach wealth building seminars a few times per year. 😊
What is the most pivotal moment in your career?
The most pivotal moment in my career is when I discovered that through real estate, I had the ability to change the trajectory of my family, my children, and generations to come!
Where do you find the most joy in your life?
I find the most joy in life when I am surrounded by my family and loved ones. Especially, if I am traveling with them and exploring new places, cultures, foods, and countries!
What would you tell your 15-year-old self?
You are going to accomplish great things and you are worthy of everything coming to you!!! Be fearless and authentically you!
What is your favorite activity to do in Colorado?
My favorites places to visit in Colorado are those that consist of being outdoors in nature! I love being next to a lake with my kiddo and my husband. It brings so much peace and joy to my life. My most favorite recently was camping at Twin Lakes.
At what point in your life did your personal philanthropy become important to you?
Philanthropy has always been important to me. I believe that we should use our God given talents to become a beneficial presence in this planet. While money is one of the most important resources for organizations; we can contribute to organizations in different ways such as donating our time and non-financial resources like our experience, skills, and talent to help them accomplish their mission.
Who would you be your dream speaker for the Annual Luncheon?
Oh man, that’s a tough one! So many inspiring women.. Isabel Allende or AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) would be amazing!
What movie scene lives in your head rent free?
I am a fashionista so Miranda Priestly’s “That’s All” moments in The Devil Wears Prada.
Should pineapple exist on pizza? What is your favorite pizza topping?
Totally, the only think I do NOT like on Pizza are anchovies… (who does anyway?) other than that I am game for anything. I love Ricotta cheese on Pizza!
What is the most binge-worthy show? No judgement 😊
