Taylor Rockhold is a 2023 co-chair of Empowerment Council. She became an entrepreneur during the pandemic, is fluent in ASL, and believes in the power of giving time and money, which is why she is involved in Empowerment Council).
Tell us something not many people know about you?
I am fluent in American Sign Language (ASL)! I got my Associate degree in ASL interpreting while getting my gen eds done at a junior college.
If you had a personal philanthropic mission statement or slogan, what would it say?
Small actions, small victories, community-centered.
What about our mission inspires you?
Women are so resilient – often impacted the most by bad policy and always the catalyst for change toward better communities. I can’t think of a more meaningful place to spend my time and money than to continue to advance women in Colorado.
What do you believe is the most pressing issue women and families are facing in Colorado?
The continued rising cost of living and childcare. Women cannot rise to the top if they continue to disproportionately carry the burden.
Who is your Shero? Who have been the leaders/mentors on your journey?
Women who inspire me – Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Brene Brown, Michelle Obama, Lizzo, I could go on. The women who have led and mentored me on my journey include mother and grandmother, my best friends, and many more women that have opened doors and nudged me into rooms that intimidated me.
What is the best personal decision you’ve ever made? Why?
Moving to Denver eight years ago! It was personally very challenging for me to leave behind the comfort of my small hometown, but I knew I had to shake things up. I owe a lot to the push of bravery I had making that decision – my life today looks so different than I ever knew was possible.
If you had to teach a class, what would it be?
How to define success for only yourself.
What is the most pivotal moment in your career?
Probably starting my own HR Consulting business during COVID after getting laid off. It was scary and hard, but I learned so much and it allowed me the freedom to do some important work on myself and ultimately led me to my current company in a role that I love.
What would you tell your 15-year-old self?
R E L A X – No one knows what they are doing and there is plenty of time to find your way. Make sure to take chances on yourself and limit your always and your nevers. Explore.
What is your favorite place or activity to do in Colorado?
I love Nederland, CO after a hike and of course, Red Rocks.
At what point in your life did your personal philanthropy become important to you?
I grew up in a very small town where doing what you could for your community was the expectation. The journey from being able to give time vs. money is still a balance, which is why I love the Empowerment Council – it is the best of both.
What movie scene lives in your head rent free?
“There’s no place like home” from Wizard of Oz and also every song in that movie.
